secured is where they have a signature/co-borrower or hold on something tangible, that they can take if you don't pay. unsecured loan is just signature without anything additional, such as a credit card. unless you pay money toward the card, to guarantee or secure it, it is unsecured. a lot of ccard places ask you to deposit money, and you use your own money as the ccard money, until you build up a payment reputation, then they return your money and make it unsecured.
