Can I be sent to jail for not paying a credit card dept?
January 19, 2009 - Why don't you want to pay your credit card debt, your the one that run the bill up aren't you? What are you anyway a Dead Beat? PAY IT.
- maybe points against your credit LOL LOL
not likely.... they will try to get the money... then they will sell it to a collection agency... now you will have a bad credit report.... or sometimes they just discharge the debt... depends on the company and the amount... which is then passed on to the consumer in higher interest rates and higher prices at the stores...
- Not unless fraud is involved but your credit will hurt you for a long time!

- Those people will tell you anything to get you to pay them their money. Don't believe that.
The only way I can see that you could go to jail for not paying is if they take you to court and you are ordered to do something by the court, such as pay, say $25.00 per month until it is pain off. If you choose not to do that, you can be held in contempt of court, and the judge has discretion on possibly county jail time for contempt charges.
- No but they can do nasty things to your credit and put a lien on any property you own, making it almost impossible for you to do anything financially.
- nope, no chance. its a civil matter. Your credit is just screwed for 7 years minimum.
NO, debtors prison is a thing of the past. Now they will just send you to collections and then if you don't pay them they will either write it off and/or report it to the credit bureaus.. By the way, if the collectors are you telling you that they are not abiding by the FDCPA which protects the debtor by setting standards that collectors have to abide by. If they do not and you report them to this agency not only can you get the debt squashed, but you can sue for damages for harrassment and unprecidented threats. I know I am a Collector (but I am a nice one)
- Making fradulent purchases that you do not intend to pay for is a crime. It's possible to go to jail for this.
